 Diary - Saturday December 7, 2002

Well, it's been over a week since I last sat down here at the laptop to type a few thoughts to you all. I guess the big news here is the end of Ramadan has come and so everyone is now back into a more regular schedule, able to eat and drink at will now versus just at night and in the early morning before sunrise. It's good news for us as the guys can work a bit more consistently without dehydrating as they always do during the month of Ramadan. We continue with the landscaping and today the lads are filling the flowerbeds with compost and soil so that we can transplant some flowers and shrubs from our little nursery that we started before we left here in May.

A regular visitor We are hoping our shipment from Dubai arrives soon as we have a lot of things coming that are essential to the final finishing work, especially in the clinic. I continue to treat patients in our house but it will be much better when we can set up in the clinic space.

We have another meeting scheduled with the Jambiani Community Development Committee on the 15th of this month where we hope to clarify the details of the opening etc. and also to answer any questions they might have about how the project is developing.

I must say we do find the process of dealing with local government a bit frustrating but then that's something for us to come to terms with it seems. Hakuna matata. :-)

We are hoping that the water supply to the village will be back on line within the next week or so. This has been a real hardship for many of the people here and it sure will make life a lot easier, especially for the women who do carry most of the water for their homes.
