Diary HABS

 Diary - Friday, February 24, 2006

Greetings everyone from the "Spice Island" and we hope that this latest update finds you all well and with excellent energy and good health. It has been a bit longer than I had hoped to bring you the latest news from the project here in Jambiani but somehow time seems to become much more malleable here on Zanzibar and in fact when someone asks what time it is we often, for instance this month, will say February. :-) It is, to a certain extent, a bit of a joke but with some relationship to the truth for we really don't follow a traditional time frame here. This I personally love.

Dr. Nathalie GagneDr Nathalie is spending her last day in the Clinic today and on behalf of all the people she has been able to help during her stay with us and on behalf of HABS, we thank her from our hearts for taking the time to come to Zanzibar to help. Nathalie has had a pretty challenging time here, but we are grateful for all that she has done and we pray that her experience will positively influence her life over the years to come.

Nathalie did not write too much but I will include what words she was able to put together:

"How overwhelmed I have been with the cases I have seen here. What a great occasion to trust in our innate abilities. It has been a great opportunity here to outgrow comfort zones and personal limitations. An unforgettable experience!"

Dr. Nathalie GagneThank you Dr Gagne :-)

Our next volunteer comes to us from Nova Scotia. Dr Kristine Self is a Chiropractor who has previously visited Africa when she climbed Mt Kilimanjaro a few years ago. As always, we are very excited to welcome someone new to Zanzibar and we look forward to introducing her to Jambiani. More on and hopefully from Kristine at a later date after she has arrived and settled in.

Well things are really starting to heat up here now and not just weather wise. We have had pretty extensive meetings with our engineer/builders over the past several weeks and we are now well into the planning and implementation phase of the Juice Bar/Restaurant project.

Garage foundations
This is a picture of the foundations of the garage being built with the clinic in the background.

Here's a picture taken from the clinic of the almost completed garage.

Although we haven't actually started the construction yet, we expect to begin within the first week or so of March. Pat has also had meetings with authorities in the Tourism sector and it appears that we have full support at that level so this is very encouraging and I think speaks highly of just how well integrated and accepted we are in this community now.

One project that we have almost completed is the garage for the vehicle. The purchase of the vehicle and construction of this garage has been made possible by contributions from several Rotary Clubs in Europe and the UK as well as an organization called Cordaid so we are very grateful to all involved for making this effort to help.

As I mentioned before, we'll also send some pictures after the vehicle has arrived.

At this time Pat and I would like to thank Mr Ocke Schuttevaer, his wife Norma and all of their family, friends and acquaintances for going above and way beyond the call of duty to raise funds for the Jambiani Project. Ocke has dedicated a lot of time and expense over the past couple of years to help us and he has finally decided to take a break. Through his efforts, we have definitely been propelled to an entirely new level of function, one that will enable us to fulfill our mandate as an NGO and one that will enable us to create opportunities for growth and change and to literally change the lives of hundreds of individuals. Once again, this has to be good no matter how you look at it and we will keep you informed during the entire construction process up to and including our grand opening which will hopefully be in the not too distant future.

Otherwise, we are all well here in Jambiani. We are focused, we are positive and we are excited about our ever increasing potential to help others and with the coming together of so many positive and constructive energies, seemingly dedicated to making this world a better place for us all.

Much love in all-ways from the "Team" here in the "Jam".
