TWECS Evaluates 4750 Patients in 9 and One Half Days!
Well, the party is over so to speak and what a time we have had
here with the team representing the Third World Eye Care Society.
I find it a bit difficult to adequately describe the experience
we have had working with so many people over such a short period
of time but I can say that it has been a very unique and powerful
occasion, one that we will remember for many years to come.
The second week of the clinic seemed to bring us more patients
from other areas of Zanzibar as during the first week we were
concentrating primarily with checking Jambiani residents only.
The team collected lots of statistics for the Ministry of Health
and were able to identify those individuals needing surgical intervention
or those with disease conditions needing more specialized medical
care. It has been so heart warming to see people experiencing
enhanced vision for the first time in perhaps many years. The
people of Jambiani and in fact of all Zanzibar are so grateful
for the commitment and assistance offered to them by TWECS and
its most amazing team of volunteers.
We finished up the second week with a closing ceremony that involved
the presentation of plaques expressing thanks to the hotels that
provided room and board for the Doctors and assistants whilst
they were here in Jambiani, thanking all the interpreters who
assisted with communication and even HABS was also a recipient
of a plaque plus a very generous donation from TWECS organization
to help us continue with our project. So thank you TWECS for that!!
We ended the day with a locally prepared meal of pilau and drinks
so everyone left pretty full and content.
On Saturday most of us attended a dinner celebrating the Rotary
Club of Zanzibar Stonetown's first anniversary. This was a great
event held at Mtoni Marine Resort and I think all of us in attendance
had a great evening connecting with one another and enjoying some
fabulous food and dancing.
Pat and I were able to ensure that the team checked in OK for
their return flight to Canada on Sunday and I have to say, we
were sad to say goodbye to such fine people and friends.
So once again, thank you TWECS for choosing Zanzibar and we hope
you will come again one day to work your magic and share your
big hearts with us all.
I expect to provide another update within the next two weeks
or so with the latest on the school project and building and also
to provide some information regarding our ongoing volunteer schedule
which will be back into full swing starting January 1st, 2007.
Hope you are all well and keeping fit and positive.
Much love,
A and P
