Diary - Tuesday, May 22, 2007
First of all, we hope that this long overdue update finds you
all well and enjoying yourselves wherever you may be this day.
I think this has been the longest interval between updates since
we first started this website way back there when.
I think the main reason for this is that we don’t have too
much new to report since our last entry. My brother Andrew and
his wife Debbie, their two children Noah and Cailey are presently
visiting us and so we have really been enjoying having family
with us for just the second time since we began our project here
on Zanzibar. They actually just got back from a safari on the
mainland, doing the northern circuit in Tanzania. From all reports,
the trip was outstanding.
Pat and I just returned from Kampala, Uganda where we spent 5
days at a District Rotary Conference with representatives from
most East African countries. What a fabulous organization. I had
tears in my eyes on so many occasions just witnessing the selfless
attitude of these folks who just want to make a difference for
those less privileged. The energy was positive and everyone we
met was enthusiastic and optimistic about the future. As you all
know, we have had support from Rotary, and I now have an even
greater appreciation of how this group functions and just how
large an organization it is. Thank you Rotary!!!
We are now into the final stages of the building project. All
of the plastering is complete and they are almost finished the
terrazzo flooring on the ground level. We are expecting our shipment
from Dubai any day now and at that point, we’ll be able
to start installing toilets, sinks, wiring, light fixtures, doors,
locks, shutters and of course begin the painting. I’ve added
a few recent pictures for your information below.
The clinic continues to be a source of great enjoyment for me
personally and I think in my almost 30 years of practice, I’m
having the most fun now. Our volunteer scheduled for June/July
had to cancel just recently, so I’ll be holding down the
fort until August when our next practitioner arrives. We’ll
give you more details as that time approaches.
We are starting to take placements for 2009 now so if you know
of any energetic and motivated practitioners who are looking for
a new experience, please pass along our information to them.
Of course Pat is as busy as ever keeping as busy as ever. Besides
all of her other commitments she is now developing curriculum
for the new school program so that is taking up most of any spare
time she has. It seems these days we see each other in the evenings
and catch up on what we’ve been up to during the day. It’s
all good though and we have no complaints.
We have just about finished our rainy season now and as the northern
latitudes head into summer, we are moving into our winter and
a favorite time of year for most Zanzibaris.
Life continues to keep us pleasantly occupied here and we have
not lost our enthusiasm or commitment to our ongoing efforts to
help others in need.
As always, we appreciate the ongoing support of all of you who
in one way or another have helped in the past, continue to assist
us now or who have made a decision to participate at some future
date.
I will make every effort to post another update within the next
month as I’m certain there will be a lot of changes in the
school project by then.
That’s about it for now. Take care everyone and much love
to you all from the entire HABS team in Jambiani.
