Greetings everyone from a very warm and sultry Zanzibar. The long rains are finally making their presence known and our gardens are once again powering along with the increase in ground water. It is really a fabulous time of the year to be here and to feel and sense the renewal in all the systems that rely on abundant moisture for their existence.
As promised, I’m including a few pictures below of the Operation Africa project. These pictures were sourced from Sue Sakaki and her team so once again thank you so much for all that you did to help this community and of course HABS. We are grateful!!
We would like to take this moment to thank Dr Ingrid Neufeld and Elke Rosendahl for their great contribution to the Wellness Centre and to Jambiani during the time they spent with us. They were a really compatible team and managed to help literally hundreds of patients get treatment and advice for the myriad of presenting complaints we see each day. Thanks so much!!!!
Our latest volunteer is a lovely lady from Victoria. Sarah Christie has been on Zanzibar for about 8 months on a previous assignment with the Canadian branch of the Aga Khan Foundation and will be with us until June teaching in the JTTI. We’ve lucked out with Sarah who brings with her a whole tool box of skills and attitudes that have already made her presence here a pleasure to be around. Thanks so much Sarah for your energy, proactivity and enthusiasm. We are grateful!!! By the way, Sarah also makes some of the best muffins I have ever tasted!! There is a Goddess. :-)
At the end of this month we will be welcoming Alex Walter who is coming to us for a four month stay. Alex just happens to be one of my cousins so I’m particularly excited to be able to spend some time with him. Alex will be involved with the JTTI and is bringing with him some well honed IT skills which I’m sure will be put to good use during his visit. Karibu sana Alex!!
We are into the final couple of months before we graduate our first two year diploma students. What a milestone for all of us and I have to say, that this has been a very challenging process but a rewarding one none the less since we first commenced the program two years ago. I'll definitely be posting photos and information regarding the graduation day after the event which will occur at the beginning of June.
As we are into a low season now as far as tourists go, the restaurant has been less busy however we still see some people each week and we are gearing up for what we expect to be a very productive and exciting second season for the “Well”. We’ve learned so much since we first opened in December and the tasks do not seem nearly as daunting as they did in the beginning. As well, the students in the first year program are being increasingly trained to understand all aspects of the restaurant and its function so they are well prepared to take over the work that was previously undertaken by the second year group. Good luck everyone!!
Looks like I’ll be solo in the clinic for the next month or so as we have had a couple of unexpected cancellations in our roster for the Wellness Center. That said, we do have an Australian Chiropractor tentatively scheduled for June and possibly July and also I’m meeting with a Danish Physiotherapist tomorrow which may evolve into her being with us later this year as well. It’s just great how all things seem to find their natural level and trusting that the best outcomes eventually materialize has been such a good lesson for me over the years.
Anyhow, all is well here as we head into our winter season once again and we hope that life is being gentle with you all and that if you are just coming out of the winter months that your spring and summer are wonder-full.
Until the next time, all good to you and lots of fond wishes from all of us here in Jambiani.
