Dear friends of HABS, friends in general, family and anyone else who may be reading this update. First of all, Pat and I and all of the HABS team here in Jambiani would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very merry holiday season and we hope that the New Year brings nothing but good your way as we power along into 2010.
In some ways it’s hard to believe that it has been over 12 years since we first set foot on Zanzibar – an event that certainly has changed our lives and of course the lives of many thousands of individuals who have benefited from our programs since that time. Even though this journey has entailed a lot of hard work we continue to be amazed at how the small fire that Pat and I set back in 1997 has continued to burn with ever increasing intensity. This has been largely due to the participation of so many other individuals and organizations who have seen merit in the work that is being accomplished here and who have wanted to contribute in some way. There is no question that without this support, we would not be making nearly the impact that we are today. So thank you everyone for your trust and belief in HABS Zanzibar.
Our biggest challenge now is one of sustainability. We have most of our infrastructure in place and we just need to generate enough funds each year to cover the costs of “running” this show. None of us receive any reimbursement for our work so our administrative costs are almost zero unlike a lot of larger organizations whose administrative budget is substantial.
Fund raising is a difficult proposition for Pat and I as we are well and truly entrenched here and getting away is becoming increasingly difficult with all of the responsibilities we have locally and yet we do need funding in order to continue with what we are doing. The addition of Alibi’s Well is now beginning to offset our yearly expenses but we do not expect this income source to sustain us 100% just yet. We would love to be fully self sustaining and we are working towards that end but until that day comes we do require help. So on that note, we are reaching out to you all, with this our very first “Christmas Appeal”, to consider making a donation to HABS as part of your strategy to make a difference in this world. We can assure you that every cent raised will be used carefully and with the intent of keeping our work viable. As a registered charity we can offer receipts for income tax purposes in Canada so if you are looking for a great cause or need to reduce your taxable income, then please consider us.
Donations can be made via internet banking or sent to our local administrator in Victoria, Dr. Stan Marcus. If you require a receipt then please mention that to Stan and he will arrange to get that to you.
Thank you all so much for considering HABS as worthy of your contribution and we will continue to do our very best to help those folks less fortunate than us.
Warm regards,
Alastair and Pat and the HABS Team in Jambiani
