Tea picking in Sri Lanka, the traditional way.

 Sri Lanka Project

Alastair and Pat travelled to Sri Lanka once again in 1999, to consult on a joint project sponsored by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the Tea Research Institute (TRI) of Sri Lanka.

This project focused on the development and field-testing of a new and "user friendly" carrying basket for tea pluckers. Traditionally, the women carried heavy loads of plucked tea in baskets on their backs, supported by a strap that rested on the top of their heads. The new system that was developed eliminated the need for the head strap and was shown to greatly reduce the mechanical stresses placed on the plucker’s neck and back.

One of the unexpected spin offs from this work was the improvement in the quality of tea being produced from leaves being picked by women using the new system.
